Matucana 100 opens its stage to new Chilean music

During the end of July and the first days of August, Matucana 100 will present a concert series dedicated to artists who are renewing the Chilean music scene. There will be four days featuring independent projects that, from different genres, territories, and identities, seek to expand the sounds and discourses present in national music.

The programming will begin on Thursday, July 30 with the release of Calendarios, the debut album of the artist from Temuco, Cualmarcelo, his personal project after having received very favorable reviews with his band Cuáles iQuiénes. The album was released on digital platforms last April 10 and, during this concert, it will also be presented for the first time in CD format to the public of the Metropolitan Region.

The proposal of Cualmarcelo establishes a dialogue between experimental folk, different currents of indie rock, and poetry. His work maintains a strong connection with southern Chile and, especially, with Temuco, the city where he held a first release of this album, which will feature a prominent support band and scenography specially designed for this occasion.

The opening will be in charge of Inundaremos, a band that recently released Tanquemante, an album that has received positive reviews within the independent circuit. Both proposals share a musical and poetic exploration that centers on cultural diversity, territories, and the different identities that make up the country.

On Friday, July 31 it will be the turn of Killua97, who will perform alongside Buen Día Abril. Cristian Díaz Iturra, the name behind Killua97, is a 27-year-old singer, songwriter, and writer from La Pintana. Since his first appearances in the underground circuit in 2019, he has stood out for his versatility, charisma, and closeness to his followers.

His songs address love, life in the neighborhood, and the search for a better future. His career includes the EPs No. 2, Ballin y Love Songs —the latter surpassing 15 million streams—, as well as the albums Sky’s the Limit, #luvbolakaNiñoAmor, and Love Songs 2. Currently, the artist works accompanied by a band that has allowed him to expand his sound and explore new musical horizons.

The day will also feature the participation of Buen Día Abril, a Chilean indie pop band born spontaneously from the desire to make music for fun. Their sound combines an organic and retro production with international influences such as Beach House and The Sundays, as well as references from the national scene. Much of this is reflected in their self-titled debut, independently released in June.

On Saturday, August 1, Diavol Strain will celebrate their 11 years of career with the release of Eterno Retorno, their fifth studio album. The Riot Goth band, born in Valparaíso, will present this new work live, recorded by Pablo Giadach and mixed and mastered by William Faith in the United States. The concert will open with Derrumbando Defensas, a hardcore metal band from Temuco, adding a new regional proposal to this meeting with Chilean independent music.

The series will conclude on Sunday, August 2 with a day presented by JoyBoy Records and Sello Casata, which will bring together Fonosida, Paracaidistas, Frucola Frappé, and Aquí Brillamos.

The event will be dedicated to Chilean alternative pop rock and will gather independent bands with ten years or less of career. The initiative seeks to provide visibility and strengthen the circulation of projects in a daytime schedule and a group that has made waves with small venues and even international tours or performances at Lollapalooza.

With this musical block, Matucana 100 aims to open new spaces for independent creation, connect different communities of artists and audiences, and contribute to strengthening a diverse, decentralized, and constantly evolving national scene.
