The United States Geological Survey has declared a preliminary magnitude 7.3 earthquake on the southwest coast of Mexico with a tsunami alert.

The earthquake, recorded at 08:48 at 95 kilometers southwest of Huixtla, Chiapas, and at a depth of 10 kilometers, particularly affected Puerto Madero, an important port and fishing city on the Pacific, located about 13 kilometers from the border with Guatemala.
According to the newspaper El Universal, the earthquake caused the emergency evacuation of hundreds of workers in various public and private buildings in Villahermosa, as well as the immediate activation of safety and verification protocols by state authorities.

In an initial assessment, the Mexican Secretary of the Navy, Admiral Raymundo Pedro Morales Ángeles, estimated that for now there is no evidence of “serious damage” from the tremor, although he recommended that residents take extreme precautions because a rise in coastal waters of about half a meter is expected but, otherwise, “there is no problem.”
The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, reported that in the coming hours an official statement will be issued with information about the seismic movement.
