Also dubbed the “peace route for prosperity,” the initiative contemplates an investment of close to 1 billion dollars for its construction. It will cover approximately 1,055 km, which would make it one of the longest highways in Africa.

The road will occupy 36% of Morocco’s coastline and will be located between the city of Tiznit and Dakhla, in Western Sahara. This southern end of the route will reach the Atlantic Port macro-project, which is expected to become operational by 2028.

“Under the visionary leadership of His Majesty Mohammed VI, and thanks to the historic courage of President Donald J. Trump, Morocco’s Sahara entered a new era in the pursuit of peace, dialogue, and prosperity,” stated the voice-over of the highway’s presentation video, disseminated by the Republican leader.

The montage highlighted the historic American and Moroccan relationship, as Morocco was the first nation to recognize U.S. independence in 1777. Nine years later, both countries signed a treaty of peace and friendship, which laid the foundation for what remains “the longest and most unbreakable diplomatic relationship in United States history,” they stated in the images.

“I thank the highly respected King of Morocco, Mohammed VI. It is a great honor! I look forward to traveling the entire length of this great highway someday, hopefully soon!” Trump posted on Truth Social.
