The president-elect of Peru, Keiko Fujimori, announced this Monday the appointment of Luis Galarreta as the next president of the Council of Ministers, on the eve of her taking office this Tuesday as the new head of state.

Galarreta, who participated as a candidate for ‘number two’ of Fujimori in these April and June 2026 elections, will assume his position as the new head of the cabinet this Tuesday when the inauguration of the first elected female president of Peru is confirmed, who takes office after failed attempts in the 2011, 2016, and 2021 elections.
Galarreta, president of Congress between 2017 and 2018, has been an important part of Fujimori’s last two presidential campaigns, whom she has described as “a loyal, hardworking man deeply committed” to the country, according to the RPP network.
“A man who has never allowed adversity to bend his convictions or his will to serve,” she said, in what seems to be a nod to the disability that has accompanied him since he was a child after being born with congenital malformations due to the drug thalidomide.
“I have asked him to lead a united cabinet, to work with a sense of urgency, to listen to the citizens, and for his management to be measured by the results delivered to all Peruvians,” said the president-elect of Peru.
For his part, Galarreta has stated that he accepts the task with the responsibility it deserves and has set as main objectives to tackle the high rates of citizen insecurity, make the country more attractive for investments, generate employment, as well as reduce poverty and inequalities.
Likewise, Fujimori has also announced the appointment of Elmer Cuba as the new head of the Economy portfolio, and journalist Carlos Espá as the next Minister of Foreign Affairs, known for his role as director between 2002 and 2024 of the popular investigative journalism program Cuarto Poder.
With barely 50,000 votes difference, Fujimori defeated Roberto Sánchez in an electoral event marked by a decade of deep political and institutional instability crisis, during which up to eight presidents have circulated.
